How long does it take before the income protection coverage begins?

From the moment you take out income protection, a qualifying period and possibly a deductible period must pass before you’re entitled to receive payouts.

After purchasing the income protection, there is a six-month period during which you must remain employed. However, if you transfer your seniority from another income protection plan – and have been insured elsewhere for at least six months leading up to the start of CA Income Protection – you will be covered immediately.

Once the qualifying period is fulfilled, you may be eligible for coverage if you lose your job. Please note that there may be a 30-day deductible period during which you must cover the difference between your unemployment benefits and your previous salary yourself – depending on whether you chose coverage with or without a deductible.

In which situations is income protection not covered?

If you need to use your income protection, it can only be activated in cases of involuntary unemployment. If you resign voluntarily or are dismissed due to your own misconduct, your income protection will not provide coverage.

Please also note that the insurance does not cover illness that you were aware of before the policy start date or any pre-existing conditions.

Furthermore, the income protection does not apply if you do not meet the eligibility requirements for CA Income Protection. Like all insurance policies, certain exclusions apply — including force majeure events. In general, we strongly recommend reading the full insurance terms and conditions to clearly understand how you are covered.

Who needs income protection?

You can assess whether you need income protection by comparing your current income to your unemployment benefit rate. If you believe you can manage without difficulty on the maximum unemployment benefit - which is just under DKK 20,000 per month - then income protection may not be necessary for you.

On the other hand, if there’s a significant gap between your current earnings and what you would receive on unemployment benefits, you are likely someone who could benefit from income protection.

It also depends on the level of job security in your field. If you know that finding a job with a comparable salary will be difficult after leaving your current position, then income protection as a supplement to your benefits from the unemployment insurance fund could be very useful for you.
