About to graduate?

When you join CA as a student, you are already prepared to receive unemployment benefits once you graduate, if you are unemployed.

Why should I join an unemployment insurance fund while I am still a student?

There is a common misconception that you only need to join an unemployment insurance fund once you have graduated.

Even though you cannot receive benefits while you are studying, it is important to sign up in good time. To be entitled to unemployment benefits as a recent graduate, you must have been a member of an unemployment insurance fund for at least one year.

By joining as a student, you secure a financial safety net from day one after your final exam.

FAQ – Everything you need to know about unemployment insurance funds and trade unions as a student

Here you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions about the difference between an unemployment insurance fund and a trade union, and why it is important to consider both already during your studies.

What is an unemployment insurance fund for students?

A student unemployment insurance fund gives you security during your studies and ensures that you can receive unemployment benefits when you graduate. As a student member of CA, you also have access to a wide range of services you can already use while you are still studying.

Please note that you must have been a member of an unemployment insurance fund for at least one year before completing your studies to be entitled to unemployment benefits from day one after graduation.

What does it cost to be a student member of CA?

A student membership in CA is completely free throughout your studies, and you are not tied to any obligations.

When should I join an unemployment insurance fund as a student?

You can join at any time during your studies. The earlier you do it, the better. Make sure to join no later than one year before you graduate, so you are guaranteed a smooth transition to unemployment benefits after your studies.

What do I gain from being a student member of CA Unemployment Insurance Fund?

In addition to financial security through unemployment benefits if you are without a job after graduation, you get career counselling, workshops, events, and tools that you can already use during your studies.

What is the difference between an unemployment insurance fund and a trade union?

An unemployment insurance fund is a state-supported organization whose primary role is to pay unemployment benefits if you are without a job. You can think of the unemployment insurance fund as an insurance policy: just as you insure your phone against damage, you insure your finances through the unemployment insurance fund in case you become unemployed.

In short, the unemployment insurance fund takes care of your finances if you are unemployed, while the trade union looks after your rights and working conditions in the workplace.

  • Unemployment insurance fund: Works as unemployment insurance. They are the ones who pay your unemployment benefits.

  • Trade union: Safeguards your interests, negotiates your salary, and supports you with working conditions (for example through collective agreements).

Is CA also a trade union?

No, but if you are a member of CA Unemployment Insurance Fund, you can also sign up for CA Legal Assistance free of charge as a student.

CA Legal Assistance is a simple alternative to a traditional trade union, without political interests, and helps ensure that you are legally protected.

As a student, you can already use CA Legal Assistance, for example to have the contract for your student job reviewed.
